How much sunlight do seniors need?

Most older adults need around 10 to 30 minutes of sun exposure on the arms and legs two to three times a week to support vitamin D synthesis, though this varies with skin tone, season, and location. This can typically be achieved during routine outdoor activity while still wearing sunscreen on the face.

Vitamin D synthesis depends on UVB reaching the skin, and older adults are less efficient at producing vitamin D from sunlight compared to younger people. However, this does not mean unprotected sun exposure is the right solution. The best approach is to allow some incidental sun exposure on areas like arms and legs during outdoor activity, while protecting the face with sunscreen every day. In India, where UVB availability is high year-round, vitamin D synthesis happens even with limited outdoor time. A physician can check vitamin D levels with a simple blood test if there is a concern.
