What does PA++++ mean on sunscreen?
PA++++ is the highest rating in the Protection Grade of UVA system, a rating developed in Japan and widely used across Asia including India. It indicates the highest level of UVA protection a sunscreen can be rated. UVA rays are responsible for skin ageing, hyperpigmentation, and deeper UV damage. PA++++ is the standard to look for in any sunscreen you buy.
The PA system was developed by the Japan Cosmetic Industry Association as a practical way to communicate UVA protection to consumers. The rating goes from PA+ (some protection) to PA++++ (highest protection). Each additional plus sign represents a higher ratio of UVA blocking measured by the Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) method. PA++++ corresponds to a PPD value of 16 or more. In India, the PA++++ rating is used by brands that meet this higher standard and has become the most trusted indicator of full UVA coverage available in the country.
