My Skin Is a Map of the Desert: Living Under the Thar Sun with the Rabari

Herding Through Heat

In the dry stretches of Rajasthan, the Rabari—a pastoralist community—lead their camels and sheep across a burning landscape. They move with the sun, from one sparse patch of shade to another, navigating cracked earth and harsh winds.

Skin that Speaks of Survival

Centuries under the Thar sun leave visible signs: deep lines, leathery texture, hyperpigmentation. Rabari women wear bold silver jewellery and veil their faces, but even the thick cotton fabrics can't keep the heat out entirely. “The sun knows every inch of me,” one herder says.

Rituals in the Sun's Shadow

The sun is sacred, but feared. Marriages and festivals are timed after sunset or just before dawn. Water, a precious commodity, evaporates faster than it can be drawn. Even prayers are whispered with one eye on the sky.

Protection is Privilege

Sunscreen? Not even a concept. At East24, we believe skin like theirs—weathered by work, not choice—deserves the same care, the same respect. Because beauty doesn’t need filters. It needs fairness.
