Does sunscreen affect hormones?

Some chemical UV filters, particularly oxybenzone, have raised questions about potential hormonal effects based on laboratory studies. However, the amounts absorbed through skin under normal use conditions are far below levels that would cause hormonal disruption. Regulatory agencies in Europe and India currently consider approved sunscreen ingredients safe for daily use.

The concern about oxybenzone comes primarily from studies using much higher concentrations than those found in sunscreen, and from in vitro (cell culture) studies that do not replicate real-world skin absorption conditions. A 2019 FDA study did find that certain chemical UV filters are absorbed into the bloodstream, which prompted further investigation, but absorption alone does not mean harm. If you prefer to avoid chemical filters entirely, mineral sunscreens using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are an effective alternative that does not raise the same absorption questions.
