How long in sun to tan?
The time it takes to tan depends on your skin tone, UV index, time of day, and the amount of skin exposed. For Indian skin tones, visible tanning can begin within 20 to 30 minutes of unprotected sun exposure during peak UV hours. The tan is the skin's response to UV damage, not a sign of health.
Tanning is often associated with warmth and outdoor activity, but at a cellular level it represents the skin producing more melanin as a defensive response to UV damage. The melanin darkens to absorb UV and protect deeper skin cells. In Indian skin, this response is active and visible. Research shows that even a light tan represents a degree of UV damage that accumulates over time. Wearing SPF 50 PA++++ sunscreen does not completely prevent tanning in all circumstances but significantly slows the process by blocking the UV that drives the melanin response.
