What does Ayurveda say about sunscreen?
Traditional Ayurveda predates modern sunscreen by centuries but recognised the importance of protecting skin from the sun. Ingredients like sandalwood, turmeric, and certain plant oils were historically used for skin protection and cooling. Modern sunscreen science and Ayurvedic philosophy are not in conflict. Both value protecting the skin from UV and environmental stress.
In Ayurveda, protecting skin from excess heat and sun was part of dinacharya, the daily routine. Ingredients like chandana (sandalwood) and manjistha were used for their cooling and skin-soothing properties. While these have benefits, they have not been tested for SPF protection using standardised methods. Some contemporary brands have combined Ayurvedic-inspired ingredients with clinically validated UV filters, which is a thoughtful bridge between traditional and modern skincare. For reliable sun protection, a validated SPF 50 PA++++ formula is still the standard to meet.
