Why does Indian skin tan so easily?

Indian skin contains more melanin than lighter skin tones, but this melanin responds actively to UV exposure by producing more pigment as a protective response. This is why tanning happens quickly. The tan itself is the skin's attempt to shield deeper cells from UV damage, but it also means UV stimulation is actively affecting the skin.

Melanin is a natural UV filter, which is why darker skin has some inherent protection against burning. However, this does not mean darker skin is immune to UV damage. UVA rays penetrate through melanin and cause the same collagen breakdown, pigmentation, and cellular effects in darker skin as in lighter skin, just without the visible redness. In Indian skin specifically, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation tends to be more pronounced because the skin's melanin response is more reactive. Daily SPF 50 PA++++ sunscreen is especially valuable for managing this.
