What happens if I stay in the sun for 1 hour?
One hour in the sun without protection during peak UV hours can lead to significant UV exposure. For fair to medium skin tones, redness or burning may be visible afterward. For all skin tones, UV damage to the skin cells occurs regardless of whether a burn is visible. Wearing SPF 50 PA++++ significantly reduces but does not eliminate this effect.
UV exposure duration and intensity depend on the UV index at that time. During Indian summers when the UV index routinely reaches 10 or above, one hour of unprotected midday exposure can cause considerable cellular-level damage. With a properly applied sunscreen, this same hour results in a fraction of the UV reaching the skin. The practical message is not to avoid sun entirely but to always be protected when spending extended time outdoors, and to reapply sunscreen after the first two hours. Seeking shade and wearing a hat in addition to sunscreen provides the most complete protection.
