What sunscreen is acne safe?
Acne-safe sunscreens are those labelled non-comedogenic, meaning they are formulated not to clog pores. Gel-based or water-based formulas are generally the most acne-friendly. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide are a strong option for acne-prone skin, as zinc oxide also has mild anti-inflammatory properties that can be soothing for breakout-prone skin.
For acne-prone skin, the two main concerns with sunscreen are pore clogging and product feel. A non-comedogenic, lightweight formula avoids the first. A gel or fluid that absorbs quickly avoids the second. Zinc oxide in particular is worth noting for this skin type: it is a recognised anti-inflammatory ingredient used in wound care and skin soothing products, which makes it suited to reactive or breakout-prone skin. Avoid sunscreens with heavy oils, silicone-heavy textures, or fragrances if your skin is reactive. The key is finding a formula you can wear every day without it contributing to breakouts.
